Desktop
Your working environment on the Macintosh. The menu bar and the background area on the screen. You can have a number of documents open on the desktop at the same time.
Destination disk
The disk or folder that receives a copied or translated file.
Directory
A list of the contents of a folder or a disk.
Disk
A flat, circular, magnetic surface on which data can be recorded in the form of small magnetized spots.
Driver
A system program that allows the microprocessor to direct the operation of a peripheral device, such as a hard drive.
DVD-ROM
DVD Read-Only Memory. A single DVD-ROM can contain 4.7 Gbytes of information for a single sided single layered disk. It is designated Read-Only because you can read the disk but can not write to it.
DVD-RAM
A single DVD-RAM disk can contain 2.6 Gbytes of information for a single sided disk or 5.2 Gbytes for double sided disks. This media is re-writable similar to a hard drive.
ECC
Stands for “Error Correction Code.” A form of common error correction for data on storage devices. Some drives do not support error correction.
Empty partition
A partition not recognized as being designated for use by any operating system.
Filter
A file usually placed in the same folder or directory as an accompanying utility program for the use of stripping away unwanted data in the transfer of information from one format or type of computer to another. Example: Apple File Exchange: the filter would be DCA-RFT MacWrite.
Floppy disk
Used for storing programs and files. In this guide, the term floppy disk refers to 3.5-inch disks.
Foreign File Access
This component of DVD-RAM TuneUp is used to read CD-ROM and DVD-ROM disks in several different formats: High Sierra File Access, ISO 9660 File Access, or Audio CD Access.
