First, turn on caching in Caching Setup and restart. Now when a file is retrieved from the drive, the file is also written to the cache. The next time that same file is requested it comes from the cache instead of the drive. The cache should be much faster than your CD-ROM drive so access time is decreased.
Clearly it's better to have a bigger cache because it's more likely to have a previous file in it. However it's possible the RAM you're using in the cache would be better used by the system or application. Make sure the system and your running applications have enough RAM before giving any to the cache.
After a restart or a shutdown, both the RAM and disk caches are cleared.
No. Later versions prevent this because our caching only works on HFS Standard volumes. Caching to a HFS+ volume will cause copying problems and crashes. We will update the product for HFS+ caches. Watch our website for details.
3. My CD disk doesn't mount on the desktop.
Make sure that the driver is loading at bootup time. When the CD/DVD TuneUp Init extension is loading, it will give a CD icon with a little number in the upper right hand corner. The letter that precedes the number identifies the bus: S for SCSI and A for ATA. The number is the address.
If a red caret (^) appears, there's another driver loading for the drive. Turn off other CD-ROM driver extensions and restart with the drive empty. A question mark on the icon means no drive could be found. Check your cables and termination and restart.
4. Why can't I hear any sound from my audio CD's?
When playing an audio CD in an external CD drive, you will need to have speakers connected to that device. Make sure that you have speakers or headphones plugged in to the CD-ROM drives. Audio sound is different from computer data and goes through a different connector than the SCSI cable.
5. The CD Changer swaps disks at what seems like random times.
This is a result of how the Mac OS was designed and how some programs were written. They often want to know what disks are mounted, what their names are, how big of a volume they are, etc. Make sure your cache settings are set high enough to cache all the directory data. Each startup will include one shuffle through the disks to get this information.
We recently discovered a bug in the Mindvision installer (versions 4.6.1 and 5.5) that sometimes hangs the computer when installing the software. Turning off file sharing while installing will work around this problem. We have notified Mindvision and await a fix.
