WriteDVD! DVD-RAM software for the Windows® 2000 Beta Community

SAI is the first and only company to provide DVD-RAM
utility support for the Windows 2000 Beta.

Bothell, WA... Software Architects, Inc. (SAI) announced today its release of WriteDVD! for Windows 2000 Beta Build 2128.

WriteDVD! for Windows 2000 Beta provides everything you need to setup and run a rewritable DVD-RAM drive on a PC running Windows 2000 Beta Build 2128. Product components include a media type sensitive SmartDVD™ device driver, the Universal Disk Format (UDF) file system and the formatting utility FormatUDF!. Equipped with WriteDVD! Win 2000 beta users can:

• Read CD-ROM. CDR, CD-RW, DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM disks;
  
• Write and re-write for just 1 cent per megabyte to block addressable DVD-RAM disks which have a 5.2 gigabyte capacity (compared to sequentially writable 650 megabyte CDs);
  
• Format, test and write to DVD-RAM media that you can seamlessly read and re-write to on a Mac or Windows platform with UDF capability.

Compatibility and Drives Supported
WriteDVD! for Win 2000 Beta Build 2128 is fully compatible with other SAI DVD utilities including: WriteDVD! for Windows 95 & 98, Windows NT 4.0, and DVD-RAM TuneUp™ for Macintosh. WriteDVD! reads and writes to DVD-RAM disks formatted in OSTA UDF v1.02, 1.5 and 2.0. WriteDVD! supports all DVD-RAM manufacturers' drives using SCSI or ATAPI interfaces.

What is UDF?
UDF stands for the Universal Disk Format and file system. It is the key software technology underlying DVD's digital convergence capabilities. It is the internationally recognized standard data format (ISO 13346) for all DVD disks that ensures universal compatibility with DVD devices worldwide.

Advantages of DVD's UDF file system include:

• System independence. This means UDF is the optimal archival medium.
• Larger capacity. The UDF file system can store data to the terabyte level.
• Data transfer performance. Rate of data transfer (read and write) of the UDF file system matches and in some instances outperforms data transfer rates of other popular systems.
• Unicode Character Set. UDF expands your ability to use over 65,536 characters, including double-byte character sets (like Japanese) instead of using the more common but more limited ASCII set which has only 256 characters.
• Retention of the Extended file system attributes. This feature permits flexible and multiple operating system mastering capabilities without compromising the integrity of the originating operating system.
